Basics of Bleeding Disorders: Overview

The previous sections of Steps for Living covered the basics of bleeding disorders mainly from the perspectives of your early caregivers–like your parents–and for you as a young person in school.

Now that you’re becoming or already are, an independent young adult, you may still have questions about your bleeding disorder and how it may affect you during this important transitional phase in your life. As you meet new classmates, coworkers, and health care providers, you’ll want to be able to speak intelligently about your bleeding disorder and advocate for yourself.

Step Up covers aspects of bleeding disorders that relate most directly with your age group.

In this section of Step Up, there is information on:

  • “Death by Paper Cut” Syndrome – The truths and misconceptions about bleeding disorders
  • The Genetics of Bleeding Disorders –Why it’s important to know the genetics of your bleeding disorder
  • Mild Cases or Individuals With No Symptoms – How the severity of the bleeding disorder can influence treatment and health
